The cybersecurity world is full of horror stories. Examples of “what not to do.”
Now, here’s a story about a real victim, Norsk Hydro, a global supplier of infinite aluminium with activities throughout the value chain, from bauxite to finished aluminium products.
Hydro was the target of an extensive cyber-attack on March 19, 2019, disrupting operations in several of the company’s business areas in many countries. Hydro has won praise for openness in dealing with the attack.
During this major cyberattack, Norsk Hydro used Facebook and WhatsApp to communicate openly with 35,000 employees and the public. As a result, their share price went up at a time when most companies’ share prices go down.
In case you missed the original story, in March 2019, Norsk Hydro has now suffered over $75 million in damages due to a ransomware attack. You can read more about the story here.
